20 Nov, 2019, Kathmandu: All Nepal Domestic Workers Union (ANDWU) conducted series of meetings (altogether 3 meetings on 9, 13 & 14 November) in different locations in Kathmandu bringing as many as 110 domestic workers on common table.
The meeting discussed about the problems and challenges faced by domestic workers in Kathmandu. During the meeting, the participants were informed about the existing labour law and social security schemes introduced by Nepal Government. Speaking at the meeting, Vice President of ANTUF, Mr. Dhan Bahadur B.K. said ANTUF had been exerting pressure on the Government to ensure implementation of Social Security Schemes for all the domestic workers in Nepal. He also added that all the domestic workers across the nation should be covered with the implementation of Social Security Scheme in order to create decent work situation in country. Similarly, the President of Domestic Workers’ Union, Ms Sangita Baniya focused on the need of organized efforts and requested all the participants to work collectively to ensure rights of all the domestic workers.
During the meeting, the representative from ILO Nepal, Mr Sandhya Sitaula said getting organized could only help overall strengthening of all the workers. The meeting renewed membership of 110 domestic workers present in the meeting. It also decided to increase at least 100 new members in its pocket area on annual basis. Finally, the meeting was concluded with vote of thanks.
